Re: Oregon boating poll

I think NYS needs to step up its game.

Im tired of people TUBING in the middle of channels and anchoring in the middle of channels to go fishing. Only to then cast out as far as possible so you have to figure out where their line it so you dont get it caught in the prop.

Re: Oregon boating poll

I took a Boat US test when I first started boating, not needed for NC but it did help with insurance. I did NOT pass the first time I took it, I had no clue about which was the stand down vessel, etc. After actually taking the course and paying attention to the info I did pretty well, but I don't remember the score (I still have the certificate).

I must say I have I forgotten a lot of the info from the course. Also, sorry Scout, there is really very little about tubing in the channel. Mostly things you read in Chapman about navigation, radios, lights, and right of ways.

Re: Oregon boating poll

Yeah I know, but there should be some common sense in these peoples minds.

Your doing a sport where the rider is expected to fall off the tube. When Im moving 40 MPH and a 35 foot Regal is towing a 1 man tube and they fall off, my manuvering options are limited along with time to react.

Do you get towed behind a 18 wheeler on a skateboard at a safe speed on a major highway legalities asides? Its just COMMON SENSE.

Also saloming through a channel due to people anchored in the middle of it is unacceptable. Especially when manuvering through channels that arent very forgiving if you stray to far from it.

Re: Oregon boating poll

A bit of history behind the law.

If I remember correctly this law was put in place after the marine board, Oregon, and Washington State police became tired of having to pick up the remains of fisherman who would anchor in the main navigation channel of the Columbia River and refuse to pull anchor when a tug and a string of five barges was coming down river. (It was not a pretty sight).

Then combine that with the number of personal watercraft on the water who insist on wake jumping, which leads to a high number of boat collisions. One of which a friend of mine had to dive into the water to rescue a jet skier who had moments before T-boned him on the starboard just ahead of the windshield.

Simply put they needed to needed to do something.

Safe Boating to everyone.
