Orange Fuel?!

I have a 9.9 1977 Johnson and I just replaced the fuel line under the hood, as it was subject to some rubber rot. I then noticed after the engine started dying down and I unscrewed the connecter to the fuel pump the fuel had been turning orange. I know this is probably because of rust, as it was a fanta orange soda color, but where is the rust coming from? or is that not even the problem?

The Gas Tank is a 5 gallon plastic model.

My guess is that the new gas has cleaned off the old scum in your tank and is breaking down.

I did have a theory it had something to do with the tank. After pumping a little fuel out it reverts to its original normal color though. Could it still be the tank?

That happened to me when I bought new fuel lines from a local auto part store thinking a fuel line is a fuel line. Replumed from tank to carbs, to see gas turn orangish brown in fuel filter. Took off lines and put on ethanol friendly Lines from my boat mech. Made for boats and have never seen orange/brown gas again.
I did not run her with discolored gas in lines.

Back in the day we used a lubricant called "Steen-C" in our kart racing engines. It was pale blue out of the can but after exposure to light it turned bright red (when mixed with methanol/nitromethane).

The oil you are using might be doing something similar.

I just bought the fuel tank off craigslist, and it was all faded as it must have been sitting out on the sun all day forever. That would give plenty a chance for fuel to evaporate and leave behind scum right? How would i go about cleaning the tank, is there a chemical i could swish around in the tank to flush it out?

Ok I researched it some, and apparently E85 works, as its mostly alcohol. Thanks for helping me pinpoint my problem, I would have never figured that out.

I would definately look in your fuel tank and make sure there is no rust building.

I have cleaned old & even rusty tanks by using paint stripper & a couple of handfulls of small rocks. Just shake the heck out of it (in every direction) every time you walk by it for a few days.
