 Catamarans are not supposed to capsize. I am just finishing up a story for Red sky at night about my own experience with a capsized cat. Look for it in the November Review.

We used to fish a Hobie off our lake rather regularly. He used to roll it trying to run hard. I don't remember him ever completely turtling it though ... Now, our Capri 15 sloop: she went all the way one time

Interesting article Bob. Kinda' a large scale version of asking for $50 after towing a fellow boater in, isn't it?

Youtube abounds with videos of Cats pitch polling. Even some of the big ones. Not often that they break up from it though...

Good article Bob. I don't think $200k is a big number as a finders fee if by example he saved a boat like the 8 million Oracle's cat from smashing up against the rocks. Look at the damage it had just by tipping over!

My concern about these rewards though is what if it was the guy with the 14 footer or another unscrupulous individual who unites a boat from its moorings and then rescues it claiming a reward???

Great point. I hadn't considered that - probably because I'm such a "bottom feeding" cheap boat buyer  Lesson learned.

Has anyone noticed the design of the front of the cats tubes? It appears that what may be an aerodynamic design that is fine for being in the air, looks like once submerged tends to cause the tube to submarine, and pull the tube deeper into the water and greatly contribute to pitching the boat over onto its nose.

Watch some of the video links in my first post. Amazing how high tech these cats have become for their quest for the America's Cup!

i was on the bay the other day going out salmon fishing and was thinking about how high tech these boats have become..super light..but not as strong as the older traditional style hull design.
i am amazed at how the sport has changed so quickly..or am i just getting old? (shudder)
funny..i had the thought when i was out there that these boats seemed too high tech and vulnerable to damage..i mean carbon fiber is tough and light..but the ocean has ways of breaking just about anything!
i probably jinxed it by thinking that. lol.
