please help!-brought in trophy 2802 "00 twin optimax 225 for replace of trim assembly (engine stuck, hydrolic leak, etc) - and routine maintenece (impeller, filter, plugs, lower gear oil change, lub) ($3.5K)--- Engine was running fine prior, just stuck in up trim position. Incidentally, while inspecting mechanic found corroded lower portion fuel rail with loose connection fuel line, no leaks yet, but recommende repair for safety. Agreed to replace ($1.2K)...they replaced both rails with new direct injects attached. Mechanics took for sea trial to test, and engine block "explodes" with cracked 4" piece aluminum sitting under engine...says piston blew through side....no engine warning lights/overheat/oil lights, just immediately lost power on initial revving beyond idle. Told external computer diagnostics read oil pump /fuel pump ok, and they had done "pre prime" at shop. BTW, I only use the expensive opti oil and tanks and resevoir were full. They are binging back to shop, but claim this failure may have nothing to do with their repair, but will evaluate and let me know.
Is this preignition from faulty feul rail/instillation/plugs? advice would be most appreciated

I know how it feels, same thing happened to me. I hope it didn't happen to both motors. 20k for me, 40k for you. Dealer will look at you and think "just pocket change, right" since you own a boat, you must have endless resources. Believe me, it's alot cheaper going to the fish market, than trying to catch your own.

If i were on the boat at that time it failed, I'd declair whiplash and sue the repair station for 2 new Yammies. Good luck.

Orbit... just because you had a failure which happens to ALL BRANDS, there is no need of you posting BS. If you want to help the poster all said and good but if your going to bash and BS and offer no advice, pop a clutch and GTFW !!!

Its possible that the techs did screw-up but the 99-00 was know for the "Opti-pop", and what they did was in the TSB updates..just ask NICELY at the dealer if they will have a rep come in and look at motor since you spent so many $$$ and you may get some help from Merc.

yep thats why we called them opti-pops.
most folks that work on them, and I try not to just for this reason, will only warrenty that the parts were installed correctly and in accordance with service manual and the tech bullitens.
after that merc could not keep them together how in the ell can we.
of course 3.3L HPDI,FICT and E-TEC have had their issues as well.
it does get suspicious when a power head fails just after repairs but it may just be coincedental.

How many hours were on these pops? Lol, I shouldn't laugh though, I got one on the back of my mako 2101, but it's a 2007 model. It has been good to me other than the fact the water pump gills have no strainer on them. I somehow sucked a piece of stick up in the thermstats, lodged one open, got water pump alarms etc. Chewed up water pump and teardown to remove debris = $250 later, not warrantied, even though I have 6 years of some type of warranty. It's still a sore seed in my rear even a year later. My 200hp really does purr like a kitten and hasn't missed a single beat, but I think it'll be my last mercury.

I have done yamaha and mercury so far and neither are as reliable as my old johnson/evinrudes that are still going. I think some of that has to do with evolving technology not being refined though.

It does seem odd that after their work one of the engines blew up.
