I'm looking to buy my first outboard in the 50HP to 60HP range. The choices seem endless, and every dealer's brand is the best. I'm leaning toward some of the new 4-strokes, but would like to know if any manufacture stands out. I will be using this OB mainly in saltwater.

Thanks in advance

Hi Vaga
I would sugguest to look at the bill boards and see how many people are having problems with there outboards and make notes on which outboards they are having problems with. This may give you a idea which one to go with,I myself like Merc but then again I just paid out 1.600 to have it rebuilt. And its fine now, but its a buyer beware thing hope this helps you......

May your fish net have big fish....;0
Bman

Howdy, vagabond. All of the 4 strokes in that range seem to be pretty bulletproof. I have heard not one word of trouble. I spent a lot of time chatting with 4 stroke users during my week at LOTW and didn't find one who was not happy with his engine. Hondas, and Yamahas were most common, with Mercs and Suzuki/Evinrudes filling out the fleet.

The only negative I have heard is from a Merc 90 owner posted earlier here. Find and read his post.

My personal recommendation is the Suzuki/Evinrude DF50 EFI 4 stroke. If that isn't enough power for your boat, go for the DF70, which is a much bigger engine at about 100# more, but a sweetheart to use.

It is getting close to the time other makers will be introducing 2002 models. Watch for more mid-range EFI models.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB
