I found "0" compression on one cylinder of a 1997 crusader 5.7 TBI motor. This was immediately after a good sea trial and the engine hitting 4200 rpm at WOT. This was third sea trial because of debris in the gas tank and fuel filters. The cylinder in question had a hole in a valve. The dealer sent the head to be repaired. They said the piston and cylinder walls look good. If they complete the repair and all seems well, would you proceed with purchase? The motors have 740 hrs in freshwater (raw water cooled).

Here are pics of the piston & valve:

The problem will be that a whole new set of variables get introduced once an engine has been pulled apart. The big question is if the shop gets it all put back together correctly. Initially, it may be fine, but problems could emerge after some run time on the engine, etc.

I think you should move on, unless there are some over-riding reasons to hang in there.

I would not proceed with the purchase.

Thanks for your response. The biggest variable is the price is about 15-20K less than others on the market.

I don't see why it would be cause for you to turn and run. Does it really change anything? It's 15 years old and has 750 hours on it. I wouldn't even bother doing a valve job, I'd just go for a full rebuild right then and there.

I would paying a price for this boat as if the engine were completely shot at this point. As a matter of fact, I'd knock $2000 off and see if he'll just sell it to you as is. 15 year old engine...hole in the valve.... Why tear it ALL the way down to the point and not just rebuild it?
