Opinions on soda blasting

I have my outdrive off to fix my gimbal ring, i couldnt seperate lower foot from transmission so took whole unit off. I want to soda blast it, paint with alodine, zinc chromate primer and paint with rustoleum. My question is i will tape off what i can but if i get soda in some spots think that will harm anything?

Don't see soda doing anything to hurt the drive. Keep it off the seals and cover shift and water ports

I have had some experience with soda blasting. If there is any soda remaining in the pores of the metal the paint will start falling off. Soda does have advantages as far as environmental concerns. Automotive paint companies will not warrant a paint job if it was blasted with soda.
I had a Powder Coat business for 15 years and had some problems also. Plastic media blasting works the best for cleaning off paint but does not remove rust. It probably will remove the “white rust” from an out drive. Glass bead gives excellent results on castings and aluminum oxide is also very good. Try to find a shop that has a blasting room or a large blast cabinet.

I have never soda blasted just figured best way to go since its not super harsh and theoretically should be water soluble. Think soda will get the paint and corrosion off good? I plan on blasting, washing with triphosphate, rinsing well, using alumiprep, alodine, zinc chromate primer and then rustoleum professional.

There is no benefit in blasting an outdrive with soda !------Just use sand of the beach.----It is free.-----Anything that is free is " worth saving for "

you still have to pull the lower unit and take care of the corrosion holding the two halves together before you do anything

Is there a water pump impeller in your lower unit ?-----I would say you have to replace the impeller now.
