Just wondering how many of you are using them and how do you like the
performance ?
How about the handling ? Im looking at replacing my 30HP Yamaha Prop with a
50 HP Yamaha Jet on my 14.5 ft. aluminum river boat . Thanks .

Jeff

Re: Opinions on Outboard Jets

Outboard jets are great...they make a lot of noise, they eat alot of fuel, and not very responsive to throttle or steering. They do get you to places a prop won't. If I didn't spend so much time in water that was less than 2' deep I would probably use a prop. I have a 16' welded aluminum boat with a 120 Johnson. I have pulled a skier and some wakeboarders but mostly I use this boat in rivers. Very versitile but beware of the afore mentioned quirks. just a Thought

they also have no "true" nuetral or reverse! for reverse it puts a reverse plate down, for neutral it lowers that plate halfway!! but this you always most of the time going a little forward (like .0000002 miles an hour)

Thought 101

Hows the skating issue ? Ive seen these 16 ft. aluminum inboard Sport jet boats all over the river and they make some incredible turns . Just wondering how the OB version is on a 10 deg hull like my Princecraft Pro 14 ?? Thanks

Jeff

You slide around a bit...but you get some time in the boat and some practice and you learn to anticipate...you know what the boat is going to do and you react accordingly. I have a 120hp Jonny on a 16 ft welded alum lite and quick. You don't need the power till you are manuever thru some serious whitewater. The more power the quicker the response. The first time you take it out on a lake and make a turn at speed you might get alittle concerned as the boat will turn but you will still be sliding straight. But with time you will get comfy with the way it handles. you could always keep some extra weight in the bow at first...thatta way you have enough hull in the water to make more responsive...just some Thoughts

a 120 on a 16 foot aluminum? i have a 60 hp and at top end it does want to act funny sometimes its still somewhat scary going full throttle how can you have a 120 on a 16 foot! i have float boxes welded onto the back of my boat also. originally rated at a 40 horse, then rerated to a 60 hp.

if you were to get in some real shallow water with alot of mud think it would tear it up?

The only thing that can really tear one up is sucking rocks into the impeller housing. There is a grate over the suction that prevents big rocks from getting in, but occasionally one makes it way by. There is a replaceable aluminum sleeve in the housing that takes the majority of the scarring if this happens. Keep the Impeller and housing in tolerances and the outboard jet is an amazing tool for running in skinny water....

Forward is a sraight jet system. Reverse is as mentioned above a gate that redirects water flow....Pretty simple once you see one. Make sure and keep the bearing greased with a good waterproof lub...

Greg...power ratings for watercraft are based on more than just the length figure...i have a ss impeller and that saves me a lot of time cleaning up the blades. I've been over water that wouldn't cover your tennies...but then I have hit gravel bars at 40mpg...stops you kinda fast...with a small boat like that I can get it off...altho not easy...just some thoughts

Re: Opinions on Outboard Jets

Well I went and talked to another Yamaha dealer and he said that there is NO WAY they would mount that 50 Yammie 4stroke Jet on my Princecraft 142 Pro because of the weight . My 30HP prop Yammie weighs in at 136 lbs , the 50 Jet is 223 lbs.
Im tending to believe him and maybe I should look for other avenues to explore ? Inboard SportJet Alumiweld 18 footer here I come ???
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

What do ya all think ?? Thanks for all your input !

Jeff

Re: Opinions on Outboard Jets

IMHO an outboard jet will outperform the Sportjet.
It should also give you less trouble. I really like using a 2 stroke carb motor on the jet pump for the tough use I give it. I have a 12 year old motor on my current boat and it has seen a lot of fast revs and abuse that a 4 stroke board may not take as easily. The weight factor is important also...You have my opinions and others so I know you will choose the boat and power that will suit your needs...there's no easy choices and always some tradeoffs...good luck...just some more Thoughts

Re: Opinions on Outboard Jets

Well maybe Ill look at the Merc line . I think they offer a 2 stroke jet of the 40 HP nature which would be good enough for my boat . I dont really want to get rid of the boat , it has tons of room for us and is nice and wide . Just need the prop eliminated from the situation . I think the 2 strokes are less weight . Thanks

Jeff

it shure would be nice if someone made a lower unit that was a jet that would bolt up to a jhonson or something. like an aftermarket unit

Re: Opinions on Outboard Jets

Hey Greg

They do , one of the dealers here orders pumps from some company , maybe Hamilton or Bombadier .

I thought of that already but considering the
30 % HP waste factor with the pump would of put my motor shy of to much HP . Its dragging its poor butt already with 4 of us in it :)

Jeff
