Opinions on 1998 2050LS Bayliner Capri with 3.0

Hi, I am new to this forum but not necessarily to boating. Hopefully this is the right forum. I Just sold a 1996 Wellcraft 190 Center Console with a 112 Johnson outboard. I am about to buy a 1998 Bayliner Capri 2050LS with a 3.0 115 hp inboard. I would like to know your opinions on this boat, if it is worth $5,400, and how it might compare to the 1996 Wellcraft? I appreciate your time and patience.

Can't really speak to the comparison but they are different boats for sure. The 3.0 (140hp btw) is a tad underpowered for a 20+ foot boat. Top speed in the 35mph give or take a couple.

$5400 is a too much in my opinion, but it varies based on location. It would certainly need to be in excellent condition.

And again they are different boats. What do you intent to do with it? Where will you be boating?

The entire boat is in excellent shape. It has 54 hours on the meter (not sure if this can be tampered with). The hull is perfect, the seats and carpet are excellent and the motor is "clean" by visual inspection. The seller is taking me out today on the water for a test run. I realize the motor is underpowered but I hope it will pull a skier and tubes and wakeboarder. I will mainly use the boat on a large lake.

3.0L (135 or 140HP depending on the year) will work fine for tubing and wakeboarding. Getting up on a single ski behind a 2050 will require pretty good technique from your skier but once they are up it'll be fine. I would agree that $5400 might be a bit high, especially this time of year. Might want to try negotiating that down if you decide you like it.

Thank you for the replies. I know a boat is worth what the buyer is willing to pay for it or what the seller is willing to part with it, but can I ask what you feel is a fair price for this boat with low hours, and in very good shape, but with a perhaps underpowered motor? Stainless prop, bimini top.
I know this may not be the best question to ask, but I would be curious what you think.

Low hours on an engine isn't a selling point unless it is nearly new, 54 hours in 13 years is a bad thing as far as the rings and seals are concerned. I'd personally rather see 400 hours on a boat that age and would feel better about buying it.

Nada says that average retail for that boat is about $4000, this time of year I wouldn't expect to pay a penny more.

Even at $4K, are you sure it is worth having an underpowered boat? Think long and hard before buying. The boat will not get faster with time.

PS: Coming from a '97 2050 owner with 5.7L vortec 4brl.

I'd say $4000 is about right. And the 3.0 isn't great but it will get the job done, and burn less fuel (mainly cause you will be going slower ). I have the 3.0 and it works fine for me most of the time, but of course after two years I wouldn't mind more speed. But I am also on a long lake so some days it'd be nice to air it out at 50+. Right now I am at 35-37 with a typical load.

For pricing, right now is a great time to buy, and if you can wait a month or three even better. People are ready to unload at the end of the season. Another good point of buying now is because you can make sure it is winterized properly!
