Does it have a thermostat and how hot should it run?

Re: Operating temp

All current Tohatsu/Nissan motors have thermostats. They open at about 60 degrees Centigrade. Temperatures vary throughout different areas of the motor. The oil tends to run a little on the cool side, as the crankcase gets splashed with lake/sea water. You can check temperatures at different locations (valve cover, head, etc.) using an IR thermometer "gun", available at hardware stores. Typically the telltale stream will be "warm" once the motor has warmed up. That depends on the temperature of the water you are running in, of course.

I added a temp gauge to the head and it reads around 160.

Re: Operating temp

With a start-to-open stat temp of 60C, your head is running at about 71C... essentially perfect.
