Got MY Moter Started Today but it scared the living tar out of me. It's trying to run WOT but when the throttle is on Idle. When it started I thought it would take off like a helicopter. Any Ideas? Man I'm shaking.

When you stop shaking, post back with some more information. Is it timed right? Are the linkages set right? Did someone squirt some starting fluid in that motor?

With the motor OFF, move the throttle and see if the linkage at the engine is moving correctly...

Congrats on getting it running, now try not to wreck it too soon! high revs outa the water will do that!

He's got a

1975 Mercury 650 65 horse 3cylinder

I think Clams told you to change the position of your idle screws, assuming that you did, now might be a time to move them back a bit. :)
Also disconnect the throttle linkages and work them by hand, then you can find the proper settings and reconnect at that position.
Good luck and congrats!

could the Idle screws make this thing run that fast?

The idle screws are only mixture screws, they won't greatly impact idle *speed*.

It's time for you to make sure the timing and syncronization are set "by the book". It ought to be able to throttle all the way down if set up right.

-W

What Clams said, also it's possible that he's got the belt timing off and it's way advanced. That would make it run away even with the butterfly's shut.

They should also be checked to make sure the shutters are fully closed at the lowest throttle setting. You can always give it a bit more throttle to get it started and then figure out where the idle stop screw needs to be.

Re: OOOOOOOOh MYYYYY GOOODDDD!

When I started It I had the Idle lever fully advanced for cold starting. I noticed the inner shutters were open a little then. Could that have done it?

That and moreso the fact that the fast idle lever brings in a *lot* of advance, you might have to quickly back it off after the motor fires. Spark advance is very responsible for speed on these 2 strokes.

-W

Re: OOOOOOOOh MYYYYY GOOODDDD!

well I've been to nervouse to try and start it again today. After starting it twice and having it rev up like that really made me nervouse. Both times was less than 5-6 seconds at most each time. Is that enough time to do any serious damage to the bearings or anything? If so what should I check for? FYI I had taken off the spark plugs and sqirted tcw3 oil only in each cylinder each day that I've cranked over the motor to be sure that the rings and bearings would be ok in case it wouldn't start.

Re: OOOOOOOOh MYYYYY GOOODDDD!

It's possible the motor was running entirely off of the Tcw3 oil. I've seen it on optimaxes after you prime the oil system. The engine will just run like there is no tomorrow until it runs out of oil. :D

Re: OOOOOOOOh MYYYYY GOOODDDD!

Possible but highly improbable.

He has the manual. He needs to make sure the timing and syncronization are set up EXACTLY as the manual says, that's all. Part of that procedure is disconnecting the throttle cable like he was advised. His "fast idle" lever might beed a littler less action too. And dood, you've added enough oil by now.

-W

Re: OOOOOOOOh MYYYYY GOOODDDD!

I've checked the timing/syncronization and it's dead on. I think that my fast idle is probably where my trouble was. The reason I added oil to the cylinders themselves was in hopes of preventing any ring/cylinder damage in case it wouldn't start and because I have good compression and I don't want to have to go any deeper into this motor than I have to or rebuild it. So far everything I've had to fix and replace (I know I went a little over board replacing things) has been external. Thanks so much all!!!

Re: OOOOOOOOh MYYYYY GOOODDDD!

Oh and the reason why it was so scary was that my daughter was doing the controls for me (throttle, choke and key) while I was having to jump the starter solenoid (because It hasn't been replaced yet)and the first time I wasn't expecting it to runaway so it took a couple of seconds for me to realize I had to turn it off and then convey that message to my daughter. The second time we were a bit faster at shutting it down though. We are having to do this on our back porch using a motor stand that I built. So if you can imagine the stand, the motor, gas tank and hose, battery and cables and the controls everywhere. (and yes the battery is not sitting on the cement)

Re: OOOOOOOOh MYYYYY GOOODDDD!

I have seen 2 stroke motorcycles run like that when they loose the inner crank seal or the main jet is partially blocked, leaning it out too much. Two different beast but might check to make sure you carbs are ok and not leaned out too much. Just a thought. I would sugget that you use a pure synthetic TCW3 oil until you get it figued out. There is far more high temp lubercation with the synthetic that regular oils. I say that because when I lost the inner seals on a 125 Yamaha, it ran up to above 12000 rpm and pegged the tach. I asked the mech why it didn't seize and his first question was , what type of oil was I using. Just happend to be Klotz synthetic racing oil. He said that was the only reason for not seizing at the high rpms. Just my 2 cents

Forgive me for being a bit dense, but dont you guys have fresh water hoses you can clip to the water inlets of your engines so you can start them away from the Sea/Lake??

Re: OOOOOOOOh MYYYYY GOOODDDD!

yes and that was done also. But the muffs do not add any resistance or load to the motor just provides water to the cooling system. A boat motor is not like a car where you can reasonably rev it up and not worry about it too much although that can be overdone easily. A boat motor needs to have resistance above 1000 rpms to prevent the internals from being damaged with no load. Also without a proper load the motor will run way faster than 5500 or so rpms at wot. If the load lets the motor run to fast that is bad and if it runs to slow that can be bad also because it will over work or strain the motor.
