I have a '73 Gibson 42 with twin 318's. The starbord engine only sparks as I let off the key. I can crank all day and no spark but the second I let off the key and stop cranking it fires right up. Any suggestions?

You most likely have a voltage drop at the coil during cranking due to corrosion or improper wiring.

So should I use a meter to check things out? Where do I put the meter? What readings should I get?
Also someone has installed electronic ignition but looks like they used the old coil setup. Do I still need the ballast resistor with the electronic ignition? I keep reading that electronic ignition needs/works with full battery power all the time since there are no points to burn up.

So it is wired differently than the port engine?

What make is the electronic ignition?

Some take full 12v and some don't. Some are very picky about the ohm of the coil.
