Wife and I are planning a fishing trip to the above lake the end of May. Just wondering about the area to stay while there, motel or cabins don't matter.
Also, wondering about the fishing at this time, walleye, panfish, and if bass are legal thru catch and release. We never keep the bass anyway just the pictures. Thanks for any help.

k.. I was wondering 'cuz Wisconsin has a northern lake (small @250acres) named Onieda Lake and some folks refer to the Tomahawk Chain as the Onieda chain or Onieda lake too..

ha! ..I've never heard of the NY lake

Wisconsins Onieda lake is in Onieda Co. (North Central).. same with the Tomahawk Chain (Onieda chain/lake I mentioned) .. both are good Musky hide outs with Walleyes, Largemouths and Smallies - gills are a given.

Muckett, here are a couple links for you. The walleye season starts on the 1st Saturday in May so you should be OK there. Bass won't open until late June. No matter though, the old Marble Eyes at that time of year should keep you busy enough! Pan fish are pretty much as many as you want any time of year. The walleye will probably still be fairly shallow at that time...10-20 feet or shallower.

As far as lodging, I'd do a search online. You could stay in Sylvan Beach at the East end of the lake or camp at Verona Beach. Not too sure what the accomodations would be on the west end.

Oneida Lake info

NYS DEC Site

Good luck! :)

Re: Oneida Lake

According to the 1st site I posted, there are over 58 species of fish in the lake. Last year alone, I caught Yellow Perch, Walleye, Northern Pike, Pikerel, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Freshwater drum, Channel Catfish and Bluegill. I think the best fighters were the catfish and a close second to the Drum. Still waiting to hook on one of the monster Lake Sturgeun though!

Re: Oneida Lake

Oneida lake is a shallow lake with mostly warm water species.Mainly walleye at that. Most Walleye is smaller than in the finger lakes, but there are gazillions of them.It is also a very busy lake.Once you are all the way in Upstate NY you may want to do Seneca or Keuka lake. Both are famous for all sorts of trout and land locked salmon.1 pound + yellow perch is what you come to expect in these lakes. There are very many great lodgings in the Fingerlakes area, a huge amount of vineyards and wineries (tastings)and to top it off there is the windmill in Penn Yan. This is an Amish market. It opens every saturday and it is lots of fun.It is just really nice to mingle with these people who seem to have a close to nature happiness that most people miss these days. The trout in Keuka lake are the largest because the lamprey never penetrated there. It is also arguably the cleanest water in the finger lakes. You can see minnows swimming at 20 to 30 feet depth.Keuka Lake is my favorite because starting in the eastern branch at 10 feet depth I can start with walleye, bass, perch and pike and continuing south one can change to coldwater fish.At the end of the day it is common to have a creel of limits of every fish I just mentioned. For the perch. It is a good idea to bring a five gallon bucket along, those one pound plus buggers tend to fill these buckets fast. But have a care, the perch limit is 50 fish in NY.

Re: Oneida Lake

muckett, my advice would be to go 2 hours further north to alexandria bay or massena NY and fish the st. lawrence river, any where between alexandria bay and massena is great fishn for bass, northern pike, musky, walleye.
good luck, i am from near massena and fish the st. lawrence. there are many accomodations and boat ramps.

Re: Oneida Lake

Muckett, There are a lot of places to stay around the lake, I've stayed at a place called Anglers' Bay Cottages on the north shore. Nice place. The fishing is hit or miss.

Re: Oneida Lake

Hey Muck. I fish Oneida lake a lot. Lot of Waleye, Pearch, Smallmouth bass and ugly Carp and sheephead. May be a little early for smally catch and release but should do well with walleye and pearch in early May. Jig with slow presentation or drift with dixie spinner and rake them in. They also lowered the keeper size minimum for 18 inches to 15 inches for walleye.
