I am going to look at a used boat tommorow, and it has a 2002 suzuki 140 4 stroke with 40 hours on it. The boat itself is a 2001 campion explorer 542.

Is is necessary to have a mechanic look at the out board, or can I assume that it should be in great shape. Plus it comes with a six year warentee. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. THanks Doug

Dont assume anything.
And is the Suzuki dealer close buy?
That drive for service can get really old if you have problems or want dealer service.

Also, check the hour gauge for that 40 hours. I'll bet it doesn't have one! I wouldn't take anybody's word on hours...the 5 year warranty is a plus. ;) Take a look, if you like it, think about it a week...done be rushed.

Hi learo
You can do what you want, it's a free country. If it were me I'd be having a full survey done. The same guy's that don't pay for the inspections and go through the prudent steps in purchessing a boat and/or motor, are the same guys that get on this board and cry how they got screwed two weeks later. Some times it's hard to remember that money paid going in, is money recived getting out. Good inpections and documentation are in your best interest. If you keep records of maintainance and repairs. Keep your rig in good shape, you should get your survey/inspection money back when you sell.

Re: one quick question

Doug - Kinda depends on what you know about motors and boats. If you have two left hands and have never had a boat you shure should take someone along who has been there and done that.

Before I put down some cash on the bar I would want to verify that the warranty is still valid and transferable. Have the guy tell you who he bought it from and go talk to the dealer.

Could be a cherry ot a nightmare. You can screw up a motor in far less than 40 hours.
