One problem fixed. Now possibly another?

Finally got the new thermostats in. What a NIGHTMARE! Boat runs great now, no more over heating....I can touch cylinder heads without getting burned after running for 30+ min at an idle. Anyways, boat has been in the garage for a few days and there’s a black film like wet oil. Doesn’t feel like gear oil looks more like sooty wet carbon exhaust soot.

I attached a pic. Is this normal? If not, what do I need to inspect?

Idling a 2 stroke for 30 minutes will let the excess oil residue drip out of the exhaust after it's shut down. Normal.

That question is asked almost every day.-------This is normal.----Especially after idling for hrs.-----The basic nature of a 2 stroke engine like yours.------Some fuel / oil goes in to the cylinder and is lost out the exhaust ports.----This stuff never gets compressed in the cylinder.----It is wasted.

Thank you for all the info. I should of done some research before posting this, since it seems to be posted a lot. That is my fault. Thanks for easing my mind. A few more weeks and I plan to be out on the water!

Bear in mind that if the motor worked, works on salt water, idling for extended time period at neutral is not the same as running a motor at its max wot rpm range for long time periods. If changing the thermo cooled down the powerhead, won't have the same effect at wot if already happens that that motor has already developed salt layers, crusts on its entire water jackets. If that motor counts with a temp sensor will know if still overheats at wot or it's good to go.

Motor has never seen salt before. Been a fresh water boat it’s entire life.

A section of newspaper on the garage floor catches the goop pretty well. You might run the motor in a trash barrel for a while with a generous amount of Dawn dishwasher soap in the water.
