One more question on rude '89 25 hp

I got the head gasket and exhaust gaskets back on my motor. I replaced the thermosat and a nipple that is on the top of the exhaust housing. The guy at the parts store said I should get a stream of water from the hose(that goes through the bottom of the housing). I started up motor and it is not as hot as it was, but I don't have a stream of water from the hose. I shut the motor off after a couple of minutes because I didn't have this stream of water.
I rebuilt water pump earlier this summer and the boat guy who looked at it said my water pump was working.
So my question is do you get a stream of water from this hose as soon as you start the motor? Do I need to wait for thermosat to open before I get water stream?
Thanks,
Hoping to take the boat out this weekend.

Are you talking about the hose going to the button in the bottom of the casing? If you are yes it should have water flow as soon as it is started. I have seen them clog giving false impression that something was wrong. Try taking a fine wire and shoving it up in the hole to see if it is clogged and will clear. Do this while it is not running and then fire it up and check. You can stick the wire in while it is running but done allow it to overheat.

Yes, I am talking about the hose that comes out of the casing.
I will try to run wire through tomorrow. But I don't think any water is going through, because I took hose off at nipple and it was dry.
Does this mean water pump isn't working?
Thanks,
Mary

I assume that you're speaking of the plastic fitting (water telltale outlet) that is at the back area of the hood pan. That fitting is connected to the nipple that you installed on the exhaust baffle plate via a small hose.

If so, that plastic fitting can become clogged easily. remove the hose and clean it with a piece of wire, and while you've got that hose disconnected, run the engine to see if water shoots out the hose itself. If it does, the clogged fitting is your problem. If it does not, hopefully that area is clogged somewhat which can be cleaned with a wire or air pressure.

Water is fed to that exhaust baffle plate area (That Nipple) before it flows to any other portion of the engine. If it isn't present there, find out why.

Edit: 9:54, 07/27/07: Just saw your latest post above. Yes, if no water is present at that point, either the water pump isn't functioning or a blockage of some kind exists.

Well, thanks,
I guess I'll start tomorrow trying to see if the problem is in the hose, fitting, or water pump.

I'm hoping for the hose, or fitting.

Thanks,
Mary
