Re: One for the grammar police!

over here, when i sit down with a sales rep ( singular), and the rep starts saying "we"......im looking for the third person in the room, or worrying about an imaginary friend . i would prefer to hear " my company". i agree with QC's example. "ford IS developing a new car", or ford and gm "ARE" developing a new car car together.

We generally used when referring to "We as a company" or "We as a corporation" to explain either opinions, policies, offers etc.
When asked a question or requested of something that you either have no information about or insufficient knowledge about then it's "I will get back to you" or "I will forward that information to you" etc.
My thoughts only though.

This is the correct use of "we" & "I".

1. If the situation is going well, and the customer is happy use "I".

2. If it's a bad situation and the customer is pissed use "we".

The OP should use "I" if he is referring to himself personally and "we" if he is representing a company. Why do we need paragraphs to explain that?

Either can be OK... all depends on the context.

Re: One for the grammar police!

Using the royal "we" is correct and preferred in a strictly professional setting. "I" is too personal and informal. That's why your doctor asks how "we" are doing today, rather than how "you" are feeling. It is also why you should never right an official document in the first, or second person. The third person omniscient form is most correct, and allows for the use of the pronouns "we" and/or "one", rather than "I" and/or "he/she". It drives me crazy when I watch documentaries, or how-to vids and the narrator says "He then puts the item in the mold.", or "She then trims off the excess when they should again be using the third person omniscient form by saying "The item is then placed into the mold.", or "The excess is then trimmed." All that being said, I think the customer is just trying to be a bit of a wise *****. I'm sure he understands what the PO means perfectly well, but wants to yank his chain a bit. One can only wonder why :)

Third person omniscient?
Ummm...no!

Your example is actually just the use of "passive voice". In most good prose it is better to avoid it.
The "active voice" is almost always a better bet.

e.g. - KFA posted an interesting opinion.
versus - An interesting opinion was posted by KFA.

Third person omniscient would be something like " He felt a warm glow of satisfaction as he put the item in the mold". :D
