So the storms rolled through yesterday and we lost power and we've been on the genny since then. (Hope they get it back on today.)

It's been cold (below freezing) at night so we have to run the furnace and the blower eats a fair amount of power at start up so we have to be a bit careful about what we have turned on but with a little timing we get by fine,,, but teaching the admiral about that timing is, umm, that's not working so well. :D

Why can't the furnace, microwave, coffee pot, big screen, computers, freezer, fridge, and half the lights in the house be on at the same time? Because it draws too many amps dear. Huh, I thought you said watts were what counts? Yes, they are sort of the same thing, just a different way to express it, depending on voltage. Here, let me show you a simple formula to calculate them back and forth. Why would I need to do that, isn't that what you are for? Uh, yes dear....

Just tell her it is like a diet.
Assign a "calorie" number to all the appliances and tell her not to eat more than "x" calories at a time.

Her response will likely be "If you think I'm fat, why don't you just say so." :D

We almost have spring here, but at night it turns back into winter.

But on the geny question I use a garden hose method. You can only get a certain amount of water from a hose. Any more than that and something has to quit. She gets to make the choice on what quits. Pretty quickly she will decide that FB can wait cause she'll be too cold to type.

I think you should do as I do, when my wife asks why, I just tell her I am going to bed see you in the morning..

Or you can go with roscoe's idea, let us know when and where the funeral is please...

Re: On the Genny and teaching the admiral about watts.

I lost power last week a few minutes after a torrential downpour had just ceased. It was daytime and fairly warm outside, so no need for lights or furnace, but - lord! - the basement sump was filling up fast! The water level had just reached the top of the sump, with the pressure beginning to force water through cracks in the basement floor, when I got my little Coleman generator started.

I told the Lady to "take this flashlight" and lead me down the basement stairs to the sump, as I uncoiled a 50 foot extension cord. Standing in front of the sump, with her holding the light, I removed the pump's plug from the wall outlet and......the very INSTANT that I plugged the pump into the extension cord, all the lights came back on as power was restored. She stood there wide-eyed, thinking I was a miracle man.

Some day I'll tell her that I didn't really fix the power outage. But for now, let's leave it be...

You are now qualified to teach Introduction to Electrical Engineering. Same looks on the faces and questions from freshman.
