okay all you motor guru's i need some help as i am new to the boating thing. i have a 2ooo 4.3 mercruiser. have to add about an ounce of gear oil about every other time we go out. checked the line from the reservoir to see if maybe clamp had come loose (it's ok) don't see any oil collecting in the bildge or around lower unit so after running motor left the outdrive down with some cardboard underneath to check for leaks (still nothing) the oil in the reservoir does not look milky so i assume that means there is no water in it (right?) is it normal for me to be losing a little oil or do i have a problem somewhere? thanks for the help......

Re: ??? ON LOSS OF GEAR OIL ???

I had the same trouble with my new 2001 4.3L mercruiser, alpha 1. I had the seals done under warranty and the leak still existed. The mechanic took the alpha 1 apart and discovered a flat spot on the drive shaft, which he replaced with a new one and the leak stopped. Warranty all the way. Perhaps there were other faulty drive shafts milled the same way and you could have one of them. I hope this helps.
