Replaced the boot, which meant I had to remove the outdrive. Afterwards I now find the shift into forward and reverse has changed. Now the RPMs increase a lot before the shift takes place, making a large "lurch" into gear. I checked the points (on the shift control on the engine) at which the outdrive comes out of forward and reverse, it's supposed to be about an inch between them, according to the book. I have over two inches. What's going on?

Re: OMC800 shift problem

did you wrap the cables onto the segment exactly as they came off? mine has a little illustration in the box.<br />Are the pawls tensioning the cable correctly? They should just take up any slack basically....

Ya, sounds like you have the cables twisted and not routed properly.
