Too many variables to tell what the story was. This could have been caused by a leaking head gasket. You need to have an expert look at the cylinder head and the block deck to determine if that was the extent of it.

Could be a bad riser/exhaust manifold or the joint between them.

You need to have that head checked for warps and cracks. Assemble the engine with new gaskets. Replace the water pump impeller in the drive. Check the water pump housing for warps on the flat were the impeller runs.(they were bad for that) Also check the swivel housing seals.
It wouldn't hurt to replace the thermostat also.

How long has it been since the rig has run? You've got a similar setup to mine, and if that drive ain't working right fixin' the powerplant is just gonna' be phase one of "operation consternation."

The Stringer isn't a bad drive, but they are old and some parts are tough to get hold of.

Thanks for all the info.
Gonna go get the heads checked out as soon as i can . Is there a diff between marine heads and normal car heads?

As for how long has it been since it was run i know the last owner brought it as a project from a pawn shop and he ran it and he said it over heated but he didn't have it in a lake so not sure if he had the water hooked up correctly .
As for when it was last reg for use was back in 2005 so i brought it with the intention of going threw every thing before it went back on the lake and before i start the restoration of the boat .
1 thing i found when i took the heads of one of the exhaust was cracked on the manifold where it bolts to the head
how do i check the exhaust for leaks to make sure its not rotted out inside ?
Also does any one know were to take it in Colorado
Another thing is if the exhaust has rotted out where can i get a hold of one as they are obsolete
Thanks for every thing Chris

OK i knew i needed to get heads checked but you mean to make sure the block didn't warp as well right

thanks Chris

That's a big "Ah Ha!" to me:

The Stringer doesn't hook to muffs like a typical leg, and the system needs to be either hooked up correctly (don't see the fitting on your trunion - but might be on the other side) or submerged in order to cool the engine. Goodness knows what he mighta' done to it.

It's very unusual for a block to warp. In extreme cases they will crack but only with major abuse.

You still need to check it. Can happen and need to check with a straight edge.
