OMC Upper gear rebuild cost?

I have an OMC cobra 87' 4.3. The upper gearcase needs to be rebuilt. I have been put on waiting list at local marina. How much, or what would be, the price range I can expect for them to pull OD, rebuild upper, set gearshift, replace drive onto boat. Are there any ups to just getting an outboard and gill bracket? The 4.3 is in good shape and the boat ran really well prior to running upper case w/o oil.

IMP New upper drive is about $3000.00.What it will cost to rebuild yours,only your shop can tell you.<br />I don't know how much a Gill bracket will cost,but just go price a 200 or 225 HP outboard to put on it.<br />Now we have to wonder what your hull will do with a prop set that far back in the water.<br />No easy answer,just pointing out some issues.<br />DHP

Ebay often has rebuilt or descent uppers. You may be able to scarf one that way... it's up to you.

Why does it have to be rebuilt? Lack of oil or does it only need to be resealed?

It was ran w/o oil. It will hold oil but makes a bad whining noise. I can get mine rebuilt through TC Marine & electronics for around 1100.00. I can do all but get the shift adj right when re-installing the OD, that seems like it may be a bit tricky.Maybe I should have it rebuilt and just do work myself.

I have read nothing but good things about TC. You can save a lot of $$ if you can pull the unit yourself. I don't begrudge anyone the opportunity to earn a living, but around here it seems that the labor rates for marine are way above that of autos. Then you look in the shop and see some 20'ish looking kids working on these boats and you have to wonder what you are paying for. <br /><br />Besides... it's fun and rewarding to do it yourself... and more excuse to buy more tools!!!

Reman upper housings usually run about $1500.00. New housings with a good core are about 2K.

Ignore, I missed your 2nd post IMP, which makes this reply pretty much worthless.<br /><br />I was doing some research on pricing for a rebuilt upper unit for an 1989 4.3L Cobra and found a couple of places online that wanted $1200 (asuming the core is still good on your old one). Completely rebuilt outdrive for $1600. Don't know how different the drive & prices might be for an '87, and I didn't note the sites cause I wasn't interested in buying, just getting some prices. Perhaps you can Google something like 'rebuilt OMC Cobra outdrive' if you're interested. Thats what I did. good luck.

I have the 87' OMC 4.3L-V6 cobra. I think the gear ratio is 20-19. How can I correctly determine the ratio of my specific unit?

I've worked with TC many times, and it's the cheapest way to go if you can pull the outdrive yourself, especially if you're close enough to drive in with it. Had my whole drive done in less than 24hrs for less than $2000cdn, although I didn't need new gears. That can add alot if you do. Judging by the price you listed, I'd say you go a quote WITH new gears GOOD LUCK!!!!

I have pulled and seperated the upper and lower and have shipped to TC marine for repair. I noticed that the lower unit had some fine particles of metal. Could this be caused by the upper being ran w/o oil. Since the cobra upper and lower share the oil,couldn't the partcles from upper settle into lower. Is there ant maintenence that sholu be done while upper is off?
