I'm in the process of buying a '93 Bowrider with a 4.3 Litre OMC. During the demo cruise the upper drive gears decided to disintegrate. Seems the current owner didn't refill gearcase correctly. Rebuilds seem to cost about $1400.00 -+ is it possible to just buy the parts and replace them? Or does this require special tools/knowledge. I'm willing to help the current owner and I consider myself mechanically adept, but I have never messed with a sterndrive. Should we go for the rebuild or do it ourselves??????<br />TIA, Mike

Re: OMC Upper Drive Assembly

Hey mike, few people are properly trained to rebuild a cobra upper, Im certified in them,This is not something you throw gears in, they have to be shimmed, with proper tools and knowledge. Id find another boat or give 2500 less for the boat.
