Will be repairing water pump on my old 76' 55HP in a week or so, and the manual requires something my 84' 8HP did NOT....OMC type M sealant. From looking on here I see where Marpox Sealer 1000, Boat Armor 1000, even 3M 847 may be subs...but am tired of getting the same answers here locally..."Never heard of it".. "What is it again"? Even NAPA so far has no clue. I see quarts of the 3M online but I need a small amount. Question...will ANY other stuff work in place of this???

I still have some Perfect Seal that I used on the gaskets on the 8hp, wonder why the "M" is needed on this motor and not the 8?

I use the 3M 847 on just about everything in an outboard motor that requires a sealant. If you need to clean it off, use a little acetone.

Are you reading this in the Seloc Repair Manual? If so, it said the same thing for my 87 15hp. "Sealant on the bottom of the plate and on the bolts." Drove to the dealer and after asking what I was doing, new water pump kit, he said I don't need it.....put it together dry. He said a big tube is about 30 bucks.

Looking at the plate I took off, no sealant on it, clean as a baby's backside.

Might be different for your 55 though.

No, I have an Evinrude manual. Can't find the 3M 847 either....will continue to search I guess. Don't need a quart of the stuff. I have a rubber seal gasket on the 55 as well as flat gasket, where my 8hp had just flat type. I think all it has to do is hold the rubber seal in place. Don't know why on earth the Perfect Seal wouldn't work, except maybe not thick enough. Was hoping maybe a Permatex item would work OK.

All you need is something that stays flexible and will hang around underwater good.....

3M 847 replaced the OMC type M sealer. You can buy it in tubes.

Fer gosh sakes. use the Perfect Seal on the plate and screws. That's what it's made for. As for the rubber seal, what you mainly ae looking for is something to hold it in place till you get it assembled.

I use the Aviation Permatex as a substitute and that can be purchased at Napa

Yes, I know that. I bought the Perfect Seal for my 1984 8HP longshaft and bought a can so i could use it on both motors....The issue once again is that the book asked for this and no one so far has 3m847 or knows what the heck I am asking for. One person told me to use SILICONE........clear or white!!!! I just re-read the section that mentions this and it says to use the OMC "M" sealant on the plate, which makes no sense at all....Maybe that is the way they did it in 76'....?? The gasket seal they show using on screws...I will use the Perfect Seal as suggested, forgive my ignorance as I am still learning this stuff and I was asking for what the service manual called for. But If it is good enough for my 8hp pump I see no reason why anything else would be needed. The only real thing I see different is that the 8hp used flat gaskets and this one uses a rubber seal. Thanks guys!
