What is the difference between OMC Type C gear oil and regular lower unit oil. I'm trying to get his old 55 Evinrude to shift and a few posts back 9/5/01 said to fill with Type C.

Thanks,

tg

Type "C" is no longer available, use OMC Premium Blend gear lube in the electric shift gearcase - its the ONLY recommended lube.

-John

I was told the difference has something to do
with the magnetic properties of the two gear
lubes. One is magnetic and causes electric shift units to shift on there own or confuse
forward with reverse.

I believe its actually the lubes' conductivity. Remember there are wires and exposed connectors running into the gearcase which hook into the shift solenoids. The wrong lube will allow current flow and that "freaks out" the shift solenoids. The solenoids, being electro-mechanical devices create their own "stray" currents (with the wrong lube) every time a coil de-energizes.

Well, at least this is my understanding - I admit these gearcases are a little before my time.

-John

Ditto-"John from I", use the "premium blend". The others have issues with electricity being in the area. Viscosity also plays a part.

I have had "Premium Blend" tested for other reasons-professional. It is some of the finest lube on the planet-good stuff.
