OMC Trim Motor Question

I have a 1984 OMC 3.0 sterndrive that I suspect the trim motor has gone bad. It is the gear driven Selectrim. The engine is in a deckboat and luckily I have the interior being recovered so access is pretty good. My question is this...Can the trim motor be removed without romiving the selectrim system as recommended in the Chilton's manual? I have the same problem with the tilt motor and basically disassembled the motor and cleaned it and was hoping to do the same with this but I hate to borrow an engine hoist to support the engine. Although it doesn't appear to be that big of a job the engine hoist poses a problem. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: OMC Trim Motor Question

It's been too long since I have dealt with what you have, but the 3.0L uses a mechanical screw to control trim, not hydraulic like the bigger engines.Seems you could just block the motor (underneath) and pull only the electric motor itself.

DHP

Re: OMC Trim Motor Question

Well the forum was apparently down on Sunday so I pulled it anyway. I got the motor and lower housing off and as I expected the motor was trashed. I also noticed that the housing was cracked around the cup area. Upon further inspection I found it was not only cracked up completely broken. The part is no longer available from what I can tell. Are there any good salvage yards for OMC parts?

Ebay, Ebay.

Another thought... look for a boat for sale using your setup. You can often find a boat with a bad hull or transom dirt cheap. Pull the motor/drive for parts, take the hull to the dump, sell the trailer if it came with one.

A buddy of mine recently bought a 18ft boat with trailer from a widow using the same 470 Merc engine and drive he has for $150.00! The hull was trashed as it was stored uncovered. The mechanics were in good shape otherwise.

Re: OMC Trim Motor Question

Hey R Barnes,

I have a OMC drive and motor I was thinking of parting out. I'm not all that familiar with OMC so I'm not sure if I have what you need, It's a 3.0 engine but it has hydraulics mounted to the stringers for trim. I know the trim works but not the tilt. Send me an e mail if your interested. daveg16101@aol.com

Re: OMC Trim Motor Question

I have a couple of those setups kicking around- I haven't ebayed them because they both seem to be under tremendous load - like they're tight and the electric motor draws mucho current. nothing broken though. they look mint.

I think ice in the worm gear-pot thing is what breaks the casting. Bilge water gets in there.

I think my stuff is fixable if you want to mess around with it - 50 bucks would do it - shipping will be brutal though so look locally first. hystat@hotmail.com for pics and details
