OMC Trim Indicator Removal

The arm on my 1998 175 hp Evinrude trim sending unit is stuck in the "down" position and I would like to remove the unit for repair or replacement. The parts manual shows three wires from the unit which I believe have connectors in the outboard case. The wires go thru the bracket and up into the case in a sleeve which also contains the trim motor wires.

My question is how do I "fish" these wires out and, specifically, is there some kind of "plug" which these wires pass thru?

Any other thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

Re: OMC Trim Indicator Removal

Push the mesh covering together and it expands like a chineeze finger puzzle. The wires run from the trim sender to the lower engine cowl. I would remove it to make the job easier. Usually the wires come up from the midsection to the lower cowl along the front of the engine. Mine run between little fingers in the block casting that retains them during operation. They run through a rubber grommet in the midsection. This can all be serviced without cutting any of the heatshrink ends if your careful. When you pull the old sender wires out of the sleeve tie a new wire on the ends as a pull wire to help plull the new sensor wires up the sleeve to the powerhead.

There are pins pre-installed on the wires feeding the sensor. You'll might need to remove the old ones from the existing connector (near the powerhead) and install the new pins into the existing connector body. (Not as bad as it sounds) I did on my model yours may differ. Use some WD and needlenose pliers and they will pull right out.

Thanks---any idea why the arm would be stuck---I pulled on it pretty good, but was afraid to break it---it didn't budge.
