I have an 85 Cobalt and I have to remove the transom old seal and install the new. Do I have to remove all or part of the outdrive? Do I have to use a calk or sealer arond the transom hole or outdrive? Where can I locate a good description/instructions on doing this job? Thanks! Rich

If i remember right you have the OMC 800 outdrive. If that is correct, the rubber boot is not to hard to replace. I did mine with out taking anything off. When i removed the old one i worked it off to see if putting the new one on would be possible and where the hard part would be. Not a big deal, a bit of grease on one spot and it will slide on. As for instructions both clymer & seloc have a section on this. The hard part was the large hose clamp that went around the outdrive. It was kind of tough to keep in place.

78fourwinns, did your installation require a rubber sealant? If so what kind? Thanks for the reassurance and I do have the 800 out drive. Rich

Yes it did. I believe it was called "life seal" or something like that. The place i got the boot from recomended it. If you do a seach for this topic i do belive there have been a few discussions on this that might be worth reading.

Use 3m5200 for sealant.

You can do the job I'm told without removing the drive, but I have only done it with the drive off. It's a pain in the Arse to remove the clamp with drive on. Make sure you put sealant on all of the screws too.
