OMC Transmission problems

I have a 1984 OMC SeaDrive 2.6 liter.
The motor runs great. However, when I try to engage reverse the tranmission clicks as if the gears are about to mesh but never fully engage. I adjusted the cables when the boat was out of the water and it worked fine. When I put the boat back in the water I had the same problem. Forward works fine. I am running out of cable adjustment. Any help would be appreciated. Hank

Re: OMC Transmission problems

hi Hleitao, Sounds like the shift shaft is out of adjustment or the shift cradle, shifter, or a shaft is wearing out inside the gearcase.

I have the same problem with my '85 Mariner 30 hp. Im assuming the reverse dog is worn?
It goes into reverse sometimes and then when i give it any gas it clicks out and begins making clicking noises, sometimes all it does is click not even try to engauge.

-John

Yours is one of OMCs more interesting experiments. Those cables go thru that remarkable transom mount and all the twists and turns that go with it . Diconnect the shift cable at the engine and push and pull on it. About a quarter or slightly more of an inch slop is normal .Anything more shows wear in the cable or else where. Also keep in mind cable freedom of movement itself.

Thanks Hondon
I appreciate the help.
I hope to try it out this week.
I hope it is the cable, rather then something more serious.

I removed the cable going the gear shift. I started the motor and manually moved the gear shift to reverse, this eliminated the cable. I still can not get the motor to go into reverse. Is this an expensive problem to solve? What is involevd?

You will have to drop the lower unit and set the shift rod to the correct height. It is a critical adjustment often overlooked when changing a water pump impeller.
