Hello everyone, Its been a while since ive been on but im glad to be here again and would like some advice. I am having issues getting my omc tilt to work properly. The clutch that was in the tilt previously was siezed and the worm gear would not turn it to get it to go up or down. I installed another one I had from a parts gimble and everything works fine as long as the outdrive isnt attatched. When the half moon gear is put back on the drive will go down but the clutch is slipping andd will not raise the outdrive. I can pull the outdrive up and down by hand though. Any thoughts or sugestions would be of great help. The boat is a 1975 24' reinell with a 350 and a 225 hp omc stringer electric shift leg. Thanks :)

Re: OMC Tilt problems

the clutch should be "seized". It should only slip if you hit a submerged object. If the worm gear won't turn it, it's not the clutch's fault, the motor is weak or you have poor electrical connections.

Some of the clutch packs had an allen bolt that could adjust the tension/slip threshold. Others, if they slip, had to be rebuilt or replaced - look for the allen screw in the end of the splined shaft that the pinion gear mounts to.

It is not the style that has the allen bolt tension adjuster. The clutch that wouldnt spin is the one thats seized. I have put in another but it is slipping. wondering if i Can I shim it with a washer to tighten it up? or should I try to find a rebuild kit for it? probably best idea right? It's just that anything omc is really hard to find north of the 49th paralell lol thanks for any help

Re: OMC Tilt problems

put your old clutch back in and fix the electrical system.

The electrical is fine! I did not ask about the electrical system. Ive alreadt rebuilt the tilt motor and all is fine. I asked about the "clutch" Ive already dissasembled the clutch and soaking it in brake cleen and rebuilding it but thanks anyway

you might be able to remove a shim to add some tension to the clutch. Some people have drilled and put a roll pin through the whole thing. Of course it will then not slip - it will be "seized". oh wait...

fixing the clutch ain't going to fix a weak motor though. System pulls over 100A when lifting the drive. Weak tilt probably the most discussed issue on stringer drives on this forum. At least a dozen threads detailing the design flaws and need for perfect torque on the motor at the hammer blow coupling. Doubling up on the clutch cover shim is maybe what you needed to do in the first place. That's a common way to restore some clearance to the clutch pack.

Re: OMC Tilt problems

Just rebuilt the old clutch. I took it apart and the clutch plates were fused together somewhat stopping the clutch from engaging and just being seized. I soaked everything in brake kleen, tooth brushed all plates, wiped and blowdried all the parts and reassembled it. Soaked it in 30 weight oil for 15 mins. and reinstalled the clutch. Its working better than ever. Leg up/Leg down. Thanks for all the suggestions. Hoping to be on the water tomorrow. we've got a lake the size of an ocean here :) (Shuswap Lake) and could'nt ask for a better weekend :) Thanks again
