I have an 85 Cobalt with a 800 outdrive. The seals leak badly and I have ordered a kit. Im not sure what tools I need or how the tilt drive comes apart. I removed the 4 outer screws then found the cover is stuck on the housing and I hesitate to pry or strike it too hard for fear of breaking it. Any suggestions would be appreciated regarding tools, disassembly, seal installation and reassembly. Thanks! Rich

Ok Rich...

Use a sharp putty knife and small hammer and tap that cover off, wedging the knife in the seam.

Hopefully the drive is off, makes life much easier if it is. If you don't want to pull it, you still have to remove the quadrant gear and support the drive up with something.

Remove the spring clip from the small gear and pull gear off. Remove the cover, and tap the other end of the shaft, driving out the clutch pak. Extract the outer seal.

Install the new seal, using HiTach or #2 Permatex around the outside of the seal. Drive it in with a seal installer or an appropriate size socket.

The seal kit should also include new seals for the worm drive shaft. You should replace those too... but you really need to buy yourself a service manual.

Keith, thanks for the detailed procedure! I'm new to boating do you have a recommendation for a service manual? Rich
