My throttle box will randomly lock in the neutral position and will not let me shift into forward or reverse. First time it happened on the water I took it off and opened it up, everything seemed fine so I put it back together and it worked fine for a while. I have no idea what freed it up? This has happened 5 or 6 times now. I should add that the cables were replaced and adjusted late last fall and this issue happened with the old cables and now with new cables so I am positive the issue is in the control box. The motor can be manually shifted with cables disconnected. I added a few pics to see if any of you guys see anything that looks to be the issue inside the control box. I am willing to replace the box with a used one just not looking to spend $300 on a new one. This box has the red plug. Thanks for any help or input you guys may have or suggestions on where to find a used control box.

is if the stainless screw in half of the box on the RHS is loose ? this was a problem for mw when i had shifting trouble.... also shouldn't there be a warning horn inside the control box??

Are you referring to the screw in the RHS that appears to have a washer type thing around it? As far as the warning horn, i dont know. This is how it was the first time I ever opened it.

Anyone know where I can pick up a used control box like the one I have pictured in original post?

So, when you squeeze up the red trigger and try to push or pull the throttle lever, it will not move?
Does the red trigger squeeze up or does it get stuck down?
From your pictures, I'd say to look at the red trigger mechanism that appears to be behind the circular plate.

p.s., replacing a broken part may be cheaper than replacing the whole box. You're already in.

thats a odd one that was made only for a few years as its missing the kill switch. just about any red plug model will fit but used will proberly not look as clean as yours. The lever that controls starting rpm (no idea what they call it) will lock the gear shifter so look at the way that works and that might indicate where the problem is on yours.

JDusza.....Yes, the red trigger still squeezes in just as normal. However, when you try to shift into forward or reverse it will not move at all. It completely locks in neutral. I squeezed the red handle in and put as much pressure as it could handle without breaking it and no luck.

Check fast idle lever for an interlock as glenn suggests.

Yes that came loose on mine before and caused trouble.... on another point , does your fast idle lever go all the way down? in your first pic it is slightly raised and this would cause your problem as it might still be slightly engaged inside the box. IF it doesn't go all the way down slightly adjust the cable at the thumbwheel inside at the motor to release some tension on it, and this should solve it (if that is waht the prob is)

i checked mine this morning which is the same type as the one on your boat and if the fast idle is lever is even 1/4" up the shifter is locked.

Re: OMC throttle box issue

Thank You for all of the replies! I truely appreciate everyones help.

Glenn....You are referring to the lever with the two screws in it at the top of the box above the key?? I will look into that when I get a chance, I am currently at work.

Fishfeatures...I will make sure that lever goes all the way down. If not I will try to adjust the cable going to the fast idle lever.

I would prefer to fix this one as it is in great shape for its age. I just hate the thought of being stranded and really want to have peace of mind when I am miles from the nearest boat ramp.

Thanks again everyone! I am still open to more suggestions if anything looks wrong, I will check into the fast idle lever later this evening and let you guys know.

I know this is necroposting BUT it looks like the throttle tension lever NEEDS to be inserted INTO the slot in that nylon nut the throttle tension screw screws into. Instead the nut is sitting ON the lever, pushing the lever into the throttle wheel.

More like composting. This thread is 4 1/2 years old. I think it's been fixed or replaced by now.
