OMC System Tach ???

have a 1984 Evinrude 90. Recently put on OMC Throttle Controller and wire harness. The throttle has a 3 pin plug for the tach (purple,black,grey) and the OMC System Tach I got on eBay has an 8 pin plug. I pulled pin 1,2, & 3 out of the 8 pin plug and plugged them into the 3 pin tach plug. My tach is set to 6p on the back. The only thing the tach does is show the warning light sequence when you turn the key on. I am 95% positive the 8pin plug had RED #1, BLACK #2, and GREY #3. I simply plugged the RED to PURPLE, BLACK to BLACK, and GREY to GREY.<br /><br />Am I matching the wires up correctly? Am I supposed to be using the 6p setting?<br /><br />Thanks for any help.
