OMC Stringer worm gear shaft sticking out back of housing...

1976 OMC Electric shift. I replaced the bad tilt motor and after a few uses heard a noise...now the worm gear shaft is hanging out the back of the housing where the plug/circlip used to go.

I had a mechanic tell me there was an aftermarket bracket available years ago to fix this problem by being mounted to the side of the housing. I found the above image. It was bent into an "L" shape and the over the work gear housing plug to keep it from popping out.

Yes, I would like to replace the OMC with another outdrive but this is mounted to a 50' Stardust Cruiser and just to trailer the boat is around $1000.

If anyone has info as to where I can find this bracket or a part number I would be most appreciative.

Next time bump the outdrive down in steps, do not just hit the toggle and let the outdrive slam down. That is what spit your guts out the back of the housing. New motor, lots of speed in the downward stroke, budda bing. Out shoots the shaft.

Or you can easily make one. This one could have benefitted from a bit of paint but it works fine. It is even adjustable.

Thanks oldsub! I found an OMC one online for $60 but I appreciate the picture. Just waiting for a bit warmer weather to jump in the water and install it.

You will also need the end cap and o rings, and drill 4 holes, be careful in the water. Not to mention your tilt clutch pack is now full of water and is probably siezed.
