Hi all,

My 77' 175hp OMC stringer wont go on drive or reverse. Ive been reading the manual and tells me to check for 12v of voltage on the green wire on the quick disconnect. I did checked it and no power is going thru it. I dont really know where a fuse would be on that if it even has one. Please advise on which direction I should go on this.

Thanks All

Re: OMC Stringer wont go on drive/reverse

Got it thanks. The plug on the back that connects to the outdrive was disconnected. I reconnected it but still now it seems to only go forward. Is the blue and green wire with black covers on the port side of the engine suppose to be connected together? I get 12 volts out of these forward and reverse wires also.

The blue and green wires are connected to the 2 wires from the harness.
Not positive but I think green is fwd and blue is rev.
DO NOT PUT THOSE 2 TOGETHER WITH 12V APPLIED TO BOTH WIRES.
Use a jumper from the battery and touch 1 at a time to test fwd and rev gears.
The power comes from the control box switch .

The other blue and green wires at the back of the engine are on a plug that connects to another plug from the outdrive which i just reconnected. This is a different set of blue and green wire located at the back port side top of the engine(302). The wires are covered in a black rubber and the tips look like quick disconnects. 12V only goes to one side forward or reverse.

The blue and green with the plug should be the tilt motor wires, the black rubber covered ones are the fwd and rev wires.A slide together quick connect type connector, and the rubber boor slides over it.

So where do these connect to?

You should find a similiar looking set of rubber covered wires with a small blue band and a small green band, these come from the control box.May be a grey colored cable

trace the pair of green\blue wires that are above the tilt motor, they will coming form the main harness on top of the engine, then they seperate and go down towards the tilt motor where they go through the internediate housing.

on your control box verify that the purple wire going to the control has power with key in run position, once you have power there, then make sure that have power on green wire/forward and blue/reverse.

and as mentioned above never apply power to both of the wires at the same time

I did test these shift wires and power only comes on the green when control is in forward and no power when on reverse. The blue wire has power on reverse and no power when control is in forward.

well, that is exactly what you want. you should never have power on both at once

do this, put in nuetrel and spin the prop with your hand. then go shift into F, there should be some resistance when spinning with your hand. do the same for reverse. if there is no resistance, or spinning like in Nuetrel, then you have lower drive problems, I have the exact setup you have and this is my problem as well, I lost forward and replaced the whole lower
