I'm in the process of resealing my outdrive and have hit a stumbling block and am not sure how to move forward so I'm soliciting opinions from anyone who's worked with an OMC stringer waterpump housing.

Badman, that includes you!

Please see the attached pics. The water pump housing has a male component which slips down into a female component containing two rubber seals and a 1" band of gasket like material. The gasket material fits into an aluminum sleeve that slips down inside the swivel housing. The two rubber seals fit above and below this sleeve.

To replace the lower rubber seal, the upper seal and the aluminum sleeve have to be removed. I need some insight as to how to remove that sleeve without damaging the cylinder walls it slides down into.

Any insight or assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: OMC Stringer water pump housing reseal

What year is your drive and what kind of shift mechanism do you have? (electric, hydro-mechanical, or full mechanical?) I have a '75 electric shift and your water pump housing/gearcase looks shorter than mine so I suspect it's a low profile model. What engine do you have? IIRC you have to pull the exhaust housing off of the lower unit and remove the swivel bearing assy to replace those two seals. I'll dig up my manual later and see if it's got a diagram I can scan and post.

But first, I'm going boating for the afternoon! :D I'll check in later this evening.

Edit: I just noticed your sig line says you have a 6 cyl. It should be a low profile, as the high profiles were for 8 cyl. engines. Try this link and see if they have a diagram for your unit:
