OMC Stringer tilt clarification

Greetings iboaters. I am trying to work on a friends boat for him that has been sitting for years. It is an '84 SeaRay with a 3.8 V6 OMC stringer. I have about zero experience with boats, but understand basic mechanics and so forth. I have gotten the motor to start up and run actually very well. The problem now is the tilt. Was getting clicking at the solenoids and every once in a blue moon I would get a little bump on the outboard. While removing nuts to clean solenoid connections some posts broke off so needless to say, it has all new solenoids on it currently. Removed the quadrant gear and still got nothing. So currently replacing tilt motor.

I have read several threads on replacing or repairing the tilt motor, etc, but can't find the specific information I am missing or need clarification on. So here goes, hope you will help me out...

1. The hammer coupler: Every picture I have seen of this shows both sides seated nicely together with the spring attached. When I put the spring in mine it pushes the two ends apart. Not sure if that is normal or if my spring is stretched. I do understand it needs the center pieces too, are they supposed to fall out fairly easily? Any harm using a little grease to hold them in?

2. Clutch pack: This clutch pack is SOLID. Should there be movement in the pack or should they all sit solid together?

3. Worm gear: It appears one of the pins has broken off and I found part of it when i removed the clutch pack and cleaned out the housing. I for some reason can not wrap my mind around how this is supposed to work. I get that the tilt motor turns the center shaft, which turns the worm gear, which articulates with the clutch pack and thereby turns the outer gear that the quadrant gear sits on, but either something is not working right or I am missing something. If the clutch and worm gear are in, should I be able to turn the outer gear by hand? I don't think I can, but I can with the worm gear out. When I put the worm gear and shaft in, and turn the outer gear it sucks the worm gear up into housing. then I can turn outer gear a little and it moves worm in and out. If I put the bushing/plate over the worm access hole then it will not turn. Does that make sense? if I put the worm gear in backwards and turn the shaft by hand, the outer gear turns in much smaller increments, like I would expect when working properly. I think something is either binding or not together right or whatever here??

I'm sure there is more, but hopefully you guys can help me out with this. I would really appreciate it!

That particular tilt system has a bad habit of leaking water into it. The water works it's way up to the tilt motor and trashes it. You might be on the right track by replacing the tilt motor.

Welcome aboard : ^^^ and that's about the truth of it too. :D

The pin you're dealign with on the worm gear holds the gear on the shaft assembly. I'm not going to claim to know exactly how, 'cuz I never tore mine down that far - but that assembly does come apart.

I am not sure about the clutch pack. As before - I always kinda' chickened outta' opening that up - so, I'm not sure how it works. I've always assumed it was a few moving pieces at least.

The hammer coupler looks about right. That spring looks bigger than mine did, but with the spring in I couldn't just set mine down when I worked on it. The spring would cause it to separate.

Thanks for the info guys.
Anyone know any more about the clutch pack? Just want to make sure that's OK before I give it a go...

I had a boat mechanic give me what I now consider bad advise. He told me to pack the housing with grease in order to keep water out of the tilt motor. It failed almost immediately, and the clutches started slipping. I tore the clutch pack down, and had to clean and re-assemble. Wasn't as complicated as I feared. Once I cleaned it all up, it works fine most of the time. Pretty sure it still takes on water though. It's finicky from time to time. Sometimes it quits, and I have to shake the outdrive up and down a few times. So far, that gets her going every time, but it's obviously still a problem.
