OMC Stringer stiff shift

Tried the search and all I get is cobra solutions. I'm assuming they don't apply to my Stringer. Have 800 series and shifter seems real stiff when shifting back and forth to neutral, such as when docking. I usually have to forcefully (sp)yank it into neutral. Shifting into forward or reverse FROM neutral, no problem. Shifting into neutral from forward or reverse has same problem.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Fred

It sounds like the engine disrupter is not working. idle the rpm down to 600 and see if it helps.then the motor has to be ticking like a clock or it will stall.it worked for me. hope this helps

check to see that your ESA module is working.
Just click the interrupter microswitch to she if the engine sputters.
when i switched to a new magnetic pick instead of points, I had a similar issue.

I have the same problem and it does indeed make for some stressful docking and manouvering situations. Unfortunately I do not think an accurate diagnosis has been made as of yet. Seems to me there is an adjustment that can be made to a cable at the outdrive that will correct the problem. hopefully the answer will get posted and you and i can relax once we correct our stiff shifting!

Stop the motor in gear, when boat stops moving pull it out of gear. Let us know what it does.

Re: OMC Stringer stiff shift

Could be an adjustment but this sounds very close to my problem. I've got a Cobra but my ESA wasn't working. I replaced it and it still isn't working and now appears to actually be the overstroke switch that is attached to the ESA. Definitely check the ESA before doing anything else. Just crank the engine and engage the switch and see if the motor stumbles. If it does, your problem is somewhere else. If it doesn't, then you have a switch or the ESA itself that is bad or has loose wiring.

i am having the same problem with my cobra, seems to be a popular problem with cobra sterdrives. but its probably the shift assit switch. i bent the arm a little on mine and it worked great..until it worked its way back then it got stiff again. it says in the manual you can reposition the switch but, i havnt figured it out yet. will let you know if it works
