it only goes into reverse when im in drive, and when im in reverse it doesnt do anything, it stays in reverse. What do think could be wrong, could it be the shift cable or the wires under the dash. I replaced the upper unit then this started to happen.

Re: OMC Stringer shifting issues

Do you have the Seloc manual for your boat? If you do, there is a troubleshooter on page 7-2 for the electric shift. If you need it, a downloadable copy is here: http://www.4shared.com/file/102988421/c4f26d54/OMC_64-86.html

I had my shift switch go bad, and to test it I unhooked the wires and touched them together. Sounds like you have done that and got forward and reverse to engage at the same time? If that's the case, then your switch is bad, but try connecting just forward and then just reverse just to be sure. If forward and reverse work correctly without the switch, then replace the switch.

But since you just had the outdrive off, I would guess that you pinched the wires and have a short -or- one of the wires is broke. The trouble shooter in the manual will positively diagnose either.

There are two wires, one for reverse and one for forward going into the drive. There should also be a ground strap going from the drive to the intermediate housing. Don't power up both the forward and reverse at the same time or you will break a spring.
