Hi guys,

I've purchased a boat - Windy 22 DC, 1977 with problem in the outdrive, but otherwise engine and body in good condition and I'd like to restore it to its former glory :). Engine is V8 Ford rated 175HP, the OMC Outdrive seems so called stringer/electric shift/ 400 or earlier - serial number 981059.

My first question is refer service manual - seems I need Seloc 3400. I have no time to wait delivery of hard copy. All online shared files seems gone. If no one has one to share, I'd like to buy pdf one. Any suggestion?

I suspect the damage is in some pinion/drive gear in the upper unit, it will be clear when I open it today, but any suggestions for a good place to purchase such ancient spare parts ?

Thanks in advance
Martin

You can find manuals HERE. Dunno' if they have 'em for download, but you want the OMC shop manual for that drive. It is an electric shift Stringer. And it looks pretty rough. Parts availability will depend on the parts themselsves. You can find some HERE. But some will wind up being a search on Craigslist or eBay.

Actual model number for your driveline will be on a tag on the engine. It should read something like "990229E 1977." That will tell you what you're dealing with.

Be aware that is a "vintage" (translate that "old and obsolete") drive. While you can make them go - and I actually kinda' like them - they are a work in progress and finicky.

Welcome aboard.

Thank you guys :)

Here is the progress so far:
Couldn't wait for a service manual, so yesterday started the "surgery" :).

Found the problem in the mating between the water pump shaft and the upper drive shaft - (the "tooths" (don't know the term in Englsih) on both shafts in the common mating area are completely flattened/gone)

First issue I came upon is that can not remove the nut and the gear wheel from the upper drive shaft, so will bring it to mechanic/machnist today to try to safely disassemble it.

Second issue would be to properly identify the part numbers of both shafts, so that I can purchase them..

Below are few photos. Any advices are wellcome :)

Look for the model number on the engine. I think the one on the photo is off the drive. Those are the upper and lower drive shafts you need. Pretty common fail point on the Stringer.

@kenny nunez may be able to identify this by eyeballing it.

I believe there are 2 different types/lengths for the top. I just remember having to figure it out when i did mine

There's a short and long shaft on the Stringer. I can't eyeball 'em. Others can.

Seems mine are the short versions. Found all needed at http://www.boatparts.ca/. Not cheap, considering shipping, +20%VAT tax +10% duty, but anyway - hope they'll confirm availability
