OMC Stringer Power Trim Fluid

My power trim reservoir is way below the fill mark and the OMC service manual calls for OMC Sea-Lube Premium Blend Gearcase Lube. I have no idea what that is and of course it has been a long time since it was available.

Does anyone know what is the equivalent to use for the OMC power trim? I think I have a leaky seal in one of the cylinders and it seems to me when it was leaking the fluid was red. Could it be power steering fluid? And, if so, does it make any difference which type power steering fluid you use?

Premium blend Is I believe a 70-80 weight gear oil.
No idea what the red stuff is other than T+T fluid which is available.J

I've been using tranny fluid in mine and it works just fine.

Thanks to all for the input.

Good news! I filled the trim reservoir with tranny fluid and the power trim works perfect. After running it up and down several times I did have to top off the fluid but now it works great. Nice to have the power trim working again. I may have a seal that is allowing fluid to seep out over time, but it looks like as long as I keep the fluid level up I'll be okay.

Im sure trans fluid is ok...
90wt would be too thick for hydraulics wouldn't it?
Im no hydraulics engineer...but I would say the safest bet would be to use easily obtainable Mercruiser trim oil or similar just my thoughts..

as for the leak where is it at? only bad thing about a leak is when you drain your bilge all that oil makes it out onto the ramp or worse into the water......

we have a 1978 Newman 302 ford omc stringer sterndrive project

Mine does. Most of the ones I have worked on do. Where are you looking?

The system raises and lowers the front of the engine with rams on the front motor mounts.

ATF is fine so is Engine oil.

OMC premium blend is a light viscosity oil for the electric shift models.

My V6 3.8L has Lower Unit OIL. upper unit OIL. and its weird i seen a Intermediate housing. i think thats how you spell it.. its that item where the upper unit is bolt on..

i been looking at the manual for my v6 3.8l and it doest not mention what kind of oil thats needed to be added.

i been looking for a thread in this forum of what kind of oil that needs to be added but no luck

from what i know i need to be a 20W-50 for the Engine it self. is that right?

i seen in walmart a Gear Oil for lower unit. its made by QuickSilver for mercury engine.. can i use that..?

what about the oil for the Upper unit? what kind should i use?
and how about the Intermediate housing . what oil should i replace that with?

and this different type of oil. its crazy. can the company make an oil that work for all. hehehe

For what it's worth, be it right or wrong, I've been using Citgo Supergard Marine Plus Lower Unit Gear Lube in everything. 1969 Mercruser upper and lower case, 1979 OMC 800 (all 3 cases plus trim clutch), 1996 Merc 60hp Merc Outboard, 1994 Evinrude 25hp Outboard, and the ol' 1976 6hp Johnson. (The only time I used the OMC "thin stuff" was in our long gone 1976 80hp Evinrude with the Selectric Shift.) Works great and looks, smells, feels, and is rated suspiciously like quick silver. Only difference I see is the price. Any comments are welcome.
