I replaced my impeller today in my OMC Stringer 400 today. I took a bunch of pics of the process and thought I'd share in case anyone else would like to see:

Unfortunately once I got into it and finally got to the impeller itself, I realized it was in nearly brand new condition! It must have been done shortly before I got the boat. I had no idea how long it had been since I got the boat for free. Needless to say, I went ahead and put the new one in anyhow (including housing). That job was no fun at all.

Found out that I need to replace the swivel bearing seals though. Also learned there is a Zerks fitting to grease the swivel bearing which I didn't know about before! (Always wondered what the little hole behind the swivel point in the exhaust housing was for!)

Anyhow, enjoy!

Finally, someone who is not afraid to do maintenance on OMC Stringers. I just got a 83 Starcraft Islander with a 400 Stringer and really appreciate seeing your project. I need to replace ball gears, water pump and boot this year and get nothing but negative on this site about OMC Stringers.
Is there a site that you know of where people work on Stringer projects and maintenance?

I can't say I enjoy working on it, but the boat was given to me so it's what I work on. I'd love to see more stringer maint. articles/threads, but I think we're a dying breed :)

I'll try to document more of my projects with pics.

Thanks for posting this, I've been meaning to change the impeller in my stringer for some time now, this should help.

How do you determine if the swivel bearing seals need to be replaced? Is that something you always do with the water pump?

The seals weren't in the kit, so I'd assume replacing them is optional. I replaced mine because the rubber on the top seal was chewed up (someone put the upper gearcase back into the swivel bearing wrong and ripped the rubber part of the seal.

Mine would not pump with the muffs on at all, so I tore it down to find a near perfect impeller also.

The upper gearcase filled with water so I am waiting for my upper gearcase seal kit to arrive before putting it back on.
