OMC Sterndrive Tilt Issues Again!

Hi, I posted a thread about a broken tilt mechanism on my '85 stringer outdrive. A busted shear pin on the worm gear shaft was the culprit. I put everything back together now and now it won't go up (tries to ever so slightly) but goes down easily. I know it's not the motor since I bought one I didn't need (see last project) and I tried installing both motors. I hooked up direct power to the motor, too, with a jumper pack with the same results so I know it's not a dirty connection (I cleaned those, too). The clutch pin is not too tight and the drive is appropriately greased. It must be something in how I put it back together, though everything went back the way it was supposed to. Any ideas?

I'm wondering what the chances are that I burned through 2 motors (new one is aftermarket, Ebay cheapie) while my tilt gears were frozen and I kept trying to tilt the frozen system??? I took out the clutch and it moves the tilt ring gear just fine. Just doesn't have the oomph to lift the drive.

Hook the motors up on a bench, If you have a manual, it will tell you how much torque the motor should develop. Cheapy motors are infamous for not developing sufficient torque,

does the motor try to turn? I had nothing but problems with moisture getting in and needing to clean the brushes and armature about 3 times a year.

by the way, it takes very little to make the drive go down, gravity helps.

The motor tries to turn and actually makes the drive go up about 1". I guess it's gotta be the motor though I can't get past the fact that both motors would have gone considering one is new (cheap) and the other worked prior. I can't think of anything else, though. I took apart the tilt clutch again just to make sure.

Don't know if this will help, but there's a nylon washer that goes in just before the worm gear when installing the gear and shaft in the hsg. Is that there ?? Had them bind up on me if that washer wasn't there.

There is also a nylon washer on the tilt motor shaft, at least on my '75 variety.

It could also be the clutch pack cover is too tight and binding things up. Try loosening the cover and try to lift it. If that's the problem, put an extra 'gasket' (it's actually a shim, the o-ring on the inner lip provides the seal) under the cover.

The washer I'm talking about is part # 390272. The washer on each side of the coupler is part # 310612. Look at a parts break down.

I already advised him to double gasket the cover. That is common practice. I wonder if he did it. I think he has about three posts going on this.

Boobie, oh man I think you may be right. I remember seeing that nylon washer and now that you mention it, I didn't put it back in (hand hitting forehead). I cut my own gasket with the thicker stuff and I know it's definitely not binding in the clutch cover. Thanks.
