Hello...I posted this on the outboard page by mistake........I have a 1977 18' Omega with a 190 hp omc stern drive 800 series...I have had it for a few months with no problems untill now...The stern drive will not go up or down...I used it and when I came into the dock it would not go up...I took the gear off of the drive and lifted it up manualy...When I move the switch to bring it up or down all I hear is a clicking sound from a solenoid on the engine.Do the solenoids normally click ???..I can see the tilt motor but I can't figure out how to get it out to check it...I don't know if it is a relay the solenoid or the motor...I was told that there were 2 50 amp fuses by the starter but I can't find any fuses in the engine bay...I'm getting about 12 volts to the motor but I don't know if there are enough amps to turn the motor over..I have a manual on the way .....ANY ideas would be appreciated....THANKS

Re: OMC stern drive won"t tilt up or down

Hi Dave, I had an 800 series OMC and had similar problems. On mine I had to replace the tilt motor but then I didn't get any sound at all. But if you're getting 12 volts to your engine, it's enough for your tilt motor. Are you sure your wires are tight on the tilt motor? It could be the tilt motor is frozen, maybe,a bearing. Take it out and see if it turns by hand.If it does, have it checked out. As for your 2-50 Amp fuses they should be on the starboard side near the back of the engine. Two separate holders about the diameter of your little finger, and if one blows, your engine won't make a sound. Not even a click. Been there. Good luck. Ron

Ron...Thanks for the info...The wires go into the tilt motor...So I guess they are tight...I took the tilt clutch apart and can turn the motor by hand from the stern drive side...It seems free...So I'm wondering if it could be the solenoids ...
Thanks again

When you opened that tilt pack housing, was there alot of milky oil ,or just flat out water in there? How did the pack look?Nice and clean, or a little rusty?By all means clean all elec. connections on both solenoids till they shine. Thats just good maintenance,BUT ,if you apply twelve volts to that motor and it refuses to work then you have a problem with either the motor or clutch pack.Either one has about the same incidents of failure but the clutch pack can cause even a new motor to fail by increasing its workload.

Re: OMC stern drive won"t tilt up or down

I am having the same problem as listed above. I had my motor checked, and supposibly it is ok. The motor place was not able to put it under a load. I have pulled the whole system apart. My clutch has a little bit of rust on the fins, and the oil was murky white when I pulled the cover off.

I was getting the clicking with no action until I pulled the motor out. There are 2 1/2" bolts holding the motor to the transom. I used a 2 foot extension to get to the bottom screw, it is pretty tight down there. There is a clutch with a spring between the motor and the tilt shaft. I pulled that clutch out and it fell apart in my hand because the spring wasn't attached correctly. Once I got the whole system back together again the outdrive will raise about 3 inches and just stop. Subsequent clicks of the button do nothing, and the voltage gauge on the dash goes from 12 volts to 8 volts with every click of the button. My thoughts are that the motor is drawing too much current, but the guys at the motor shop says it turns just fine. I pulled the motor out and ran it and it runs in forward and reverse when I hit the buttons.

I found a good web site that shows an exploded view of the assembly:
http://www.glm-marine.com/pdf/omc.pdf

I think I need a new motor. Does anyone have any other ideas?

WTRJOCK.......THANKS for the info...I thought you had to take the stern drive off to get the motor out ????? Do you mean that I can take the motor out from the engine side ??? Taking the motor out was stopping me ...I bought new solenoids from an auto parts store for $ 7.00 each...That might be your problem...Mine look old and I thought replacing them couldn't hurt....My clutch had mustard colored water in it and I have cleaned it and it looks ok....NOW....

THANKS

Davep and Wtrjock
Davep
If you measured 12 volts going to the tilt motor the solenoid is ok. There are two 50 amp fuses on starboard side and one of them supplies voltage to the solenoids contacts. If it is blown the solenoid will still click but will get no voltage to the motor. Also if you got new solenoid at a auto shop I do not think you should use it because auto solenoids do not have spark screens to prevent fires. You said you took the gear off, With the gear off does the motor turn ok??? If so the prolblem may be in pivot for outdrive.
Wtrjock
I am pretty sure your trouble is in the outdrive pivots. I had the same problem. I always took the rubber bumper stops off once a year a greased the two zert fittings for the pivot, but it got where it would move 3 or 4 inches and stop. The fix was to pull the rubber stops off then remove the the two caps off the engine pivot. Clean out all the old grease and grease all the way around then put back together. After that would raise all the way in a count of two, and just a tap on the switch will take it all the way down. When you take it off be careful it is heavy and has shifter wire runing to it. I put some blocks on the ground under the motor then raised the trailer toung enough to carry the weight then took it lose. Also the tilt clutch should have 30 weight oil. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Re: OMC stern drive won"t tilt up or down

Boatist.....THANKS for the info...I got my manual yesterday and see that I CAN take the motor out from the INSIDE...I can't find fuses...All I can find is what look like orange rubber like balls about 1" in diameter on the wires by the solenoids...The book says they are 100 amp fuses...What kind of fuses are they and HOW do you replace them ????
With the gear off I can tell I'm turning the motor BUT it will not turn with 12 volts applied..I'm going to take the motor out this weekend and see if I can see anything like worn or no brushes...HOPEFULLY it is just the motor...AND I can either fix OR replace it...
THANKS for all the help.........

I had the same problem with mine. it was the motor, bilge water and rust got mine. I removed the bellows to get to the motor from underneath. also the clutch pack should be cleaned. soak the clutch pack in the oil for 15 min before installing, I also learned that the hard way

Andy

Re: OMC stern drive won"t tilt up or down

Problem Solved..........I took the motor out and found the comutator to be black and water inside...I polished it and cleaned the water out..THEN I put it back together and it didn't work..I pulled the clutch apart AGAIN and found that it had small slivers of aluminun STILL atached to the housing...The brass part of the clutch had moved and slightly gouged the housing..SO I cleaned it up put it back together and it works !!! I do need a new seal ,gasket and o ring as I'm STILL getting water in the clutch housing...I think it is through the seal on the shaft it looks bad..Until I get the parts I'm taking it apart every other time I go out...If anyone knows of a good source for those PLEASE let me know....
THANKS to everyone for the help...

You should be able to get them from any Johnson or Evinrude dealer. On mine the two seals behind the small drive gear was the bad guys. I replaced the drain and fill plug seals and large oring also. Take 30 weight engine oil.
