I was wondering if anyone has ever rebuilt or has any knowlage on how hard (or how much cash..... I've heard stories!) the OMC select a trim is to work on? It is the electric one and not the oil one.

SRosaJr
What is the problem with your Select Trim??
NEED ALL THE DETAILS OF THE PROBLEM.

Does the solenoid click?
Does the trim motor run?
Does the front of the engine move up and down. Have you greased the trim motor and the lift screws?
Can be smiple or very hard. May need parts or just a little grease or adjustment.

Just picked the boat up, previous owner stated it did not work. When you throw the switch nothing happens not even a click it may be disconected. I was just tring to find out if there was a problem they were prone to or if they were easy to repair or rebuild or if they were even worth the effort. I'm a first timer at the whole I/O thing. :)

first, check the fuse. then look for loose or broken wires to the switch, selenoids or motor itself. a cheap volt meter wouldn't hurt. The switch could be bad. You could jump 12volts to the green and/or blue wires of the motor (up and down) making sure the black wire is grounded. This would confirm a working motor. If the motor works that way, just backtrack the wiring and the problem shall be found. good luck.

SRosaJR
I would check fuse first also. I think this fuse is one of two 50 amp fuses near the starter on the starboard side. Andew's idea to check with a volt meter is where I would start. Andrew I belive just installed a Select trim unit on his motor so I would trust anything he tells you.

In addition to the 50A fuse boatist refers to there should be a 6A (or so) fuse in your fuse panel that goes to the trim switch. Check that one too.
I would think a properly trimmed boat would be "worth the effort", so I would attempt to fix it if I were you. Again...good luck.

Thanks guys....I found the problem, it seems the motor is half missing, the armiture is there but the rest of it is gone. I'm gonna try to turn the armiture to see if the unit moves, it looks like the jack shaft is still greased up pretty good not rusty looking just "old" grease. Should the unit turn easily? Tried to turn by hand with no luck, gonna put a set of vice grips to it or maybe a pipe wrench to see if it turns. Let me know your input on this and maybe where I can score a replacement motor from. Would like to get it working again. Again thanks alot, I've built my share of cars but boats are all new to me, glad to see that there are still people with experience willing to help the "new guy". :)

I am not sure how easily it turns. You should be able to get a good used motor from a marine recycle supply, (there are a couple here in sacramento) and I have seen a few on e bay.
