Hi,I have this OMC roughneck...people say the company was Lowe and made them for OMC...at any rate,we've been fighting over the serial number....either it's OMC S8540L 303........or OMC S 8540E 393....can anyone shed some light on these numbers....I'm guessing the 85 is the year of the boat (utility) there is no paper work with it....thx Thump

An '85 would have a standard HIN which would end in 85, so that's not right. I'm betting on it being a '93 (last two digits of your second possible HIN). I think OMC was gone by '03.

Wow,if this is an'93 as you say,it's had a tough life structurally...we found a leak we thought was minor for it's age,and once it hit the water the small flaw turned into bilge pumping,Titanic problem....whoever owned it before me, must have loaded the bow with batteries we think, and went out in search of huge waves....Me thinks I'll discount this boat to a younger more energetic bunny, and go on...thank you sir Thumperrr

I once ran a 1960 Lowe Roughneck, probably '95 vintage, for a few seasons. I really liked that boat. It had a thin hull and leaked some water, but was easily patched and could carry a HEAVY load easily, but was still light enough to drag around in a couple inches of water. I wouldn't mind having a boat like that. The newer Roughnecks are different - they are tougher, but also heavier, require more HP, and don't carry a heavy load.
