Hello iboats friends,

My name is Michael and I just joined the forum. The topic I want to discuss could be one for most projects in general, but I wanted to hear your thoughts on my current situation and how I see the options I have.

I have three boats.... (how I ended up with three boats, still boggles me) and I am trying to figure out what I am going to do about it. I want to make as much money as I can, to become "Boat Free". So I sat down and did some research on the going prices for my 3 boats.

1. 1985 Galaxie Cuddy Cabin 19' with a 4.3L OMC Cobra. $4,500
2. 1986 Sea Ray Seville Cuddy Cabin 18' with a 3.8L Stringer. $5,500
3. 1985 Miller Custom 18' with a 3.8L Stringer. $2,800

#1 and #3 had new decks and motor mounts placed in, #2 didn't need it.

However, the current boat market here in California could take a drastic turn if we don't get a really WET Spring!
I have noticed that the local market isn't selling at all right now. GREAT DEALS... not being sold.... not even cheap boats.

However, if I go to look for a part for the boat... BIG MONEY!

So this gets me scratching my head, thinking...

A. Can I get more money parting them out?

B. What would be the going price for a complete OMC setup?

C. Do I go as far as pistons and crank sales?

D. and after all of the time and work... is it worth it?

I'm sure some of you here have already been through this, and some may have tried both methods.... I'd Like to hear your thoughts..

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... The Best way to make the Most money, is No doubt partin' 'em out,....

The motors have the Most value as a runnin' motor,...

Tearin' down a Long block ain't worth the effort, a Long block is worth more Complete,...
It's the OMC "Stuff" bolted to the Long block motor, that's worth some coin, again for those still tryin' to keep 1 runnin',...

The Stringer drive parts are worth Gold to those still tryin' to keep 1 runnin',...
The Stringer Drives are worth most as sections of a complete drive, or as pieces to put 1 back together,...

A Pulleys to Prop driveline, complete runnin' unit, ain't worth near as much as the sum of it's Parts either,...
Especially because they're OMCs,...

Ya might get the prices ya got posted there, in Parts,... but I'm sooner think the value of the boats, Complete, are maybe 1/2 what you posted, in a Boomin' boat market,...
Atleast 'round here anyways,...

^^^ concur. Complete boat prices are about double what I would expect here.

Thanks for the input. It would be nice to get 6k for all three.... and call it good.... but.... I think I will part out one 3.8L and Stringer.... toss the Miller Custom hull... convert the trailer to flatbed.... and sell. the other two sell for best offer.

So you can find a nice Sea Ray Cuddy Cabin for $2500 in your area? wow. You should see the slim selection on the Central Coast of California. Slo Craigslist (San Luis Obispo) It's more like $25,000... or $800 pos

Re: OMC Profit Talk

Right now everything seems a little inflated over what I'm used to. But, an '86 18' cuddly for $2,500 - lake ready wouldn't be crazy normally.

Went through this with someone last season. For some reason prices in California are ridiculous. If you look a state or two away they are much less!!!

Re: OMC Profit Talk

The best bet is part out the whole setup.
Then any stuff left(hulls, trailers, etc) goes to the dump.
I've tried to sell a trailer left over from a scrap job and ended up giving it away on another deal.
Go through and check to see if anything is worth reselling.
Do some checking as just selling a part might get you more trouble than it's worth.
I go through and double check everything and that way nothing comes back and my e-bay rating is 100%
My neighbor just bought a 88 22Winner with a 2003 200 Johnson and a trailer built for a 26ft.and a 2008/9 Yam 10hp kicker
Looks just like a Grady White. He paid $4000 The kicker is worth 1500.
I guess Ca.is the place to sell a boat.
But the worst part is your gonna take a while to sell all the parts.Hope the garage is big enough.

Re: OMC Profit Talk

probably 1/3 or more of the stringer parts I have sold over the years went Pacific. That seems to be where the parts still had some value.
Up here, 1980's runabouts sell for less than $1000. That's why buying fresh water boats around here and parting/shipping west was a good hobby for a while.
