I am new to boating and have purchased a 98 maxum 2300sc boat. the boat need lots of tlc but the engine and outdrive seemed to be running fine.Engine is a 302 5.o HO with omc cobra 1993 model i believe. Had the boat checked out by local mec. and was given the following info..Outdrive oil looked good no water no metal. prop was the wrong pitch for our area 19p we are at 6000 feet(lake Tahoe) wants to put a 14p on.
motor runs great but controls are a little sloppy.
I wanted to test out the boat before taking people out on the lake. I was not able to get above 2600rpms and only going 12mphs then after 1hr outdrive had a problem where it sounded like a gear stripped and engine rpms jumped to over 4000. I was on top of the controls and was able to back off the gas. Engine is fine but had to be towed in. no foward but did have reverse but did not want to see how far reverse would go and shut it all down.
This engine and out drive is not oe. 5.7 with a mercruiser is the correct engine and outdrive. with current problems and looks like a purchase of a outdrive can I go back to a mercruiser using the 302 or do I have to replace motor and outdrive. What about transon plate will the mercruiser plate be close to the same size? I was told that the transom may have be cut to fit the omc drive. Or is it all not worth the problems to flip it back out?

thanks Ed

Re: omc problems

You could have a spun prop hub, or even a spun engine coupler. If it was the drive, I wouldn't expect reverse to work either.

If you did want to make the change back to Merc, it requiers everything. Merc hasn't used a Ford since the late 70's.
However, you could replace the drive with a newer Volvo drive with either a single, or the DuoProp if you wanted. It would take some other mods, but there is a kit, and you wouldn't have to replace the transom shield

Re: omc problems

I have just dropped the out drive and split the lower unit it looks like the prop shaft may be shot. Have not been able to get it out as of yet.
I have been reading some responces on omc drives and I do not know why the previous owner went from merc to OMC but must have been cost.

I am very intrested in looking at the switch from the ford and omc to the volvo. With this size boat and the area I live in what size eng. and out drive should i look at? what mods will I have to do to fit eng and outdrive and is there info on making the changes? (changing your outdrive for dummys book)

I will need control cables also

Please point me in the right direction

Thanks
ED
