1988 OMC 460 cobra, Just replaced my U-joint bellows and remounted the pivot housing. But I see a slight difference in the gap between the thrust plates. The pivot pins (bolts) are snug in the pivot housing bushings (no play) and I see a slight angle to the right and causing a gap difference in thrust plate gaps. I know there are shims that are between the thrust plates and upper gear housing to make up the difference. My question is this normal? ie.. I have three shims on the left and one shim on the right to make the out drive fit snug in between and no stress on the pivot housing. ( I do have the thrust washers in place on the pivot housing).

any input input would be grateful,

PS: The OEM book doesn't cover this!

Thanks
Paul

Re: OMC pivot housing

Coors, Re-read sections 6-19 thru 6-21 no mention of alignment defferences. But talked to a mechannic that knows the OMC's well and he said that after awhile the torque will wear bushing(s) and friction plates. And as long as it is not more than 3/32 I can shim to it. as long as I make sure outdrive is fits snug in between friction plates(no play in bushings or pivot plates) He also addedd that should replace pivot bushings next time I pull outdrive and re shime accordingly.
Thanks
Paul
