I've got a chance to buy an 82 Scorpion Chris Craft with a 350 motor and a OMC outdrive plus a 2 yr. old tandem gal. trailer for $4000.00. I was told that I should stay away from the OMC and go with the Mercruser due to the OMC having problems with breaking down. Is this true or just someones opion.

Thanks,

Marlin

Marlin,

My age is catching up with me. Does this drive say Cobra on it anywhere? Does the drive have a flat top or sort of looks like a Mercruiser?

If it's a Cobra or does NOT have the flat top (of drive) they were OK.

MY OPINION.

Re: OMC outdrive

The stringer aspect might not be so bad , but unless the lower gearcase has been updated to a mechnical shift versus the hydro/mechnical original,I'dd think twice. That stringer mount did ok after the hydros but they are expensive to maintain and it is getting hard to find techs that will work on them.A special weak point is the tilt mechanism.
